Bad Bunny’s ‘El Muerto’ lands the Mexican director – here’s why it looks familiar

Bad Bunny will once again bring his talents to the screen, this time playing the Marvel Comics superhero, El Muerto. The film is directed by Jonás Cuarón (Desert), whose last name surely rings a few bells. Cuarón is the son of legendary Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, known for his writing work on Rome, Gravityand the iconic film Y tu mamá también.

El Muerto is a Spider-Man comic book character, which means the movie will be part of the Sony Pictures universe of Marvel characters that includes Spider-Man and Venom. The character of Bad Bunny will be the first Latino character to star in a Marvel film. El Muerto, real name Juan-Carlos Sánchez, is considered an anti-hero and is the son of a luchador who becomes the next to inherit the ancestral power of El Muerto. These powers include a luchador’s mask which also grants superhuman abilities.

Bad Bunny, real name Benito A Martínez Ocasio, is no stranger to the big screen. He starred in four episodes of the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico and also appeared in the David Leitch film High-speed train.

Sony Pictures has its work cut out after the failure of Morbius. Going in the direction of a Latin hero could turn out to be a good decision. It’s encouraging and fitting to see a successful Latino cast in this role, but some fans were a bit disappointed that a Mexican actor wasn’t cast as a Mexican comic book hero.

El Muerto is slated for release on January 12, 2024.
