Raj Mehta made his Bollywood directorial debut with Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s starring family drama Good Newwz, though the script is not a quintessential family drama Hindi cinema has seen before.

Now that the director is gearing up for his second feature JugJugg Jeeyo, he says no matter what genre he explores, his main signature is “entertainment.”

Raj Mehta tells how his mind begins to weave a story from an interesting one-liner. For her debut, it was “two couples and sperm swapping”. For his last film “two married couples of two generations and they are about to divorce”.

Decoding his thoughts behind how he defines his signature as a filmmaker, in a conversation with IANS, Raj Mehta opens up.

Raj told IANS: “Keeping the rest of my thoughts aside, I firmly believe that cinema is for entertainment. For me, entertainment is something that evokes emotion, whether it’s laughing, crying, excitement watching an action scene or leaving the theater with a thought in mind. On the one hand, I don’t want to limit myself to a specific genre like comedy, drama, thriller or action. I want to explore everything but find a fine balance between the genre I’m working on and its entertainment value.

Since the movie JugJugg Jeeyo hit the conversation about marriage and divorce, over the past two years, on the OTT space, several movies and series have been released on the same topic. Therefore, the conversation around this took place intensively.

Raj Mehta said it was one of the difficult but exciting parts of creating JugJugg Jeeyo.

Interestingly, along with actors, film makers have also become a crowdpuller of theater audiences, be it Rohit Shetty, SS Rajamouli, Prashanth Neel lately.

When asked about his thoughts on the changing role and responsibility of a director, Raj said: “You see, film has always been a director’s medium and it will remain the same. . Yes, the stars become the face of the film and the fans surely come to see them but at the end of the day, if the film is not good, which is envisaged by the director in collaboration with actors, it will score nothing.”

“But yeah, these days, common audiences are also becoming more aware of the process of making a film which is very collaborative. Maybe that’s why even common audiences notice the contribution of art directors, filmmakers , etc. Ultimately, the director is the captain, and all of our cast, crew, and producers submit to a vision and get on the same boat,” Raj Mehta signed.

Produced by Karan Johar, directed by Raj Mehta, JugJugg Jeeyo starring Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Kiara Advani – theatrical releases.
