“Things are a little different here… Most people deal with that kind of thing among themselves.” IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for God’s Country, an indie neo-Western thriller from filmmaker Julian Higgins. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and it received rave reviews, although it mostly flew under the radar during the festival. The title refers to the land on which it takes place – Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a black professor living and working in a rural town in the snowy lands of the American West. When this grieving college professor confronts two hunters she catches encroaching on her property, she is drawn into a battle of wills that escalates with catastrophic consequences for everyone. It’s a remarkably tense thriller with outstanding cinematography, but above all a commanding and magnificent performance from Newton.
